GPG Mexico concludes its summer activities with “Farewell to Summer: Building a Culture of Peace”

GPG Mexico, through the CCP Tuxpan III and IV (Tuxpan, Veracruz), organised the programme “Farewell to Summer: Building a Culture of Peace” on August 10th at Nakú Kayám, the Sea Turtle Camp located in the community of Villamar.

This activity aimed at concluding all the initiatives coordinated by the Social Management team within the framework of promoting a culture of peace, with the goal of rebuilding social ties within the community.

Twenty-three people participated in this enriching event, including 14 women and 9 men, among them young volunteers, environmental educators, rainwater harvesting system installers, and camp technicians, all from the Ruta de los Kilómetros in Tuxpan, Veracruz.

The day began at 7 a.m. with an itinerary that included transporting the young participants from various points along the Ruta de los Kilómetros and welcoming others from the community of Villamar.

The programme was carried out in three phases:

1. First phase:

This phase involved an environmental experience led by the camp technicians and GPG’s social management team. With great enthusiasm, 45 green turtle hatchlings (Chelonia mydas) were released.

During this phase, participants were informed about the newborn turtles, the nesting process, and the different species that arrive at the “Chile Frío” beach. They also learned about the care required from the laying of the eggs to their hatching and release

Participants, along with beach visitors from places such as Durango and the State of Mexico, engaged in an awareness-raising experience focused on the protection of these species and their habitat. Additionally, there was a demonstration on how to properly measure the shells of turtles that come to lay their eggs, identify the species, and accurately fill out the forms that are submitted to the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) and the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).

2. Second phase:

This phase included a series of team-building and physical activities on the beachaimed at fostering teamwork and strengthening bonds among the participants

The phase concluded with a shared meal and time to spend enjoying the sea.

3. Third phase:

The final phase ended with an activity where participants formed a circle and, using just one word, expressed their thoughts on the activities they had taken part in. The joy and satisfaction with the experience were evident, and many expressed their wish to participate in this enjoyable event again in the future.
