Promoting the traditions of the Zapotec people in Oaxaca, Mexico

In addition, our Isthmian dance project continues. The main objective is to promote the culture and education of the community.

‘Pitu nisiaba’ is a tradition associated with the preparation of the May festivities in honour of the patron saints of the region (festivities that are called ‘velas’ and are one of the mainstays of Zapotec culture).

“I have never seen a place like this before. In fact, in my childhood I always imagined something similar, but the opportunity never arose. Now that I see it, I am amazed and I want my children to take advantage of these opportunities we are being offered and that are helping the community, Julio Martínez Toledo, parent.

We held a “Lottery in Zapotec” workshop on traditional games

Our Social Outreach team conducted workshops on traditional games in the Seventh Section of Juchitán de Zaragoza. These were open to the general public, but were mainly intended for older people from the Seventh Section. The workshops were held in our centre for social relations, Nacanu’ Bií.

The workshops were attended by seven adults ranging in age from 30 to 68 years and several children aged five to 10 years, all neighbours of the Seventh Section.

At GPG Mexico, we are seeking to preserve and promote the Zapotec indigenous language, which has been affected by the passage of time and modernity.

In our centre for social relations, we have created a safe space for fun and learning to promote coexistence between adults by working to stimulate and develop their cognitive skills.
