The Hawkesdale wind farm, located in the state of Victoria, has a capacity of 97 MW and will produce renewable energy equivalent to the consumption of 67,000 homes. It covers an area of approximately 2,300 hectares and will prevent the annual emission of 333,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
GPG Australia has commissioned a new wind farm in Australia, further consolidating its international growth in the renewable energy business. The Hawkesdale wind farm, located in the state of Victoria, has a capacity of 97 MW and will produce renewable energy equivalent to the consumption of 67,000 homes.
GPG Australia has reached an agreement with Amazon to supply the energy produced by this farm, as Amazon is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040 and is the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the world, with more than 500 wind and solar projects, 79 of which are in Spain. In 2023, Amazon reached its goal of meeting its entire annual electricity consumption with 100% renewable energy.
This wind project covers an area of approximately 2,300 hectares, currently used mainly for agricultural purposes, including sheep and livestock grazing. The facility will be connected to the grid through the existing Tarrone terminal station and will prevent the annual emission of 333,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Hawkesdale is the fourth wind farm connected to the grid by GPG in Australia, raising its operating renewable capacity in the country to 492 MW, which means emission-free energy production equivalent to the consumption of 320,600 homes. In addition to the wind farms, GPG commissioned the ACT Battery project in 2023, its first storage facility worldwide.
GPG Australia has a wide portfolio of projects under development and construction in the country that will significantly increase this figure in the future. Recently, it began construction of Glenellen and Bundaberg, two new photovoltaic projects with capacities of 260 MW and 100 MW, respectively. Additionally, it is finalizing the construction of the Crookwell 3 and Ryan Corner wind farms, which will be its largest wind farm in the country, with a capacity of 218 MW.
“Australia is a priority country for us within our strategic objectives for transformation and international growth in renewable energy. In this regard, the commissioning of Hawkesdale, in collaboration with Amazon, is a very important milestone in consolidating our presence in the country, where we are already present in four states,” said Shahmir Mohajerani, Head of Development for Asia Pacific at GPG.
“Energy demand continues to rise in many parts of the world, so Amazon is committed to innovation and collaboration with local communities to drive the transition to a decarbonized energy sector and strengthen our business with a focus on sustainability,” explained Ken Haig, Head of Energy and Environmental Policy for Asia Pacific and Japan at Amazon Web Services.
Presence in Australia
GPG’s presence in Australia dates back to 2007, and it has always aimed to build a solid renewable portfolio that provides clean energy sources and contributes to the development of rural and regional communities.
Naturgy operates in the country through its subsidiary GPG, established in 2014, in which it holds a majority stake of 75%, alongside Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA), which holds the remaining 25%.
GPG manages a total installed capacity of over 4,000 MW and employs approximately 500 people worldwide.
