GPG Mexico promotes access to water in schools in Veracruz with rainwater harvesting systems

Through the Tuxpan III and IV combined cycle plants, the installation of eight Rainwater Harvesting Systems (SCALL) has been carried out in various educational centers in the region, as part of our commitment to sustainable development and access to basic resources in communities with water stress.

The institutions benefiting from this initiative are:

  • Distance Education High School of Aire Libre

  • Amado Nervo School in Chacoaco

  • Technical Industrial Institute 102 in Práxedis Guerrero

  • Abraham Castellano School in the community of La Esperanza
  • Benito Juárez García School in El Higo de la Esperanza

  • Adolfo López Mateos School in Miramar

  • Emiliano Zapata School in the community of Playa Emiliano Zapata
  • Distance Education Institute Salvador Novo in Villamar

In six of them, cisterns with a storage capacity of 5,000 liters have been installed, while two have made use of the existing infrastructure. In total, the project has benefited 608 students and 450 families.

Before installing the systems, a detailed diagnosis was carried out to assess the available infrastructure and design an intervention plan adapted to the needs of each educational centerSurveys were conducted with parents and principals to understand their difficulties in accessing water, the cost of supply through water trucks and bottles, and the periods of greatest scarcity.

This project is part of the “Escuela Xalag Chuchut 2023” initiative (School of Water, in the Totonac language), through which young people have been trained as promoters of wetland and water resource conservation in their communities.

Through educational workshops, students, teachers, and parents have reflected on the issue of water stress and the role of rainwater harvesting as a sustainable solution. As part of the training process, water committees have been created in each school to ensure the monitoring and maintenance of the installed systems.

Three young volunteers have participated in the installation of the SCALL systems: Nuria Yosuany Morales Cruz, a student of Industrial Engineering and a Solidarity Day scholarship recipient, who is also certified as an installer by Isla Urbana AC; and students from the Distance Education High School Países Bajos, Andrés Yarub Cruz Martínez and Mauricio Esteban Méndez, who have gained practical knowledge in plumbing, welding, and carpentry.

Since the beginning of the project in August 2024 until February 2025, a total of 173,000 liters of water have been harvested, which has improved access to this resource in the beneficiary communities.

A tangible impact on the community

“We are very grateful; since they installed the system, we haven’t had to buy water from the truck again”said a mother from Amado Nervo School.

“With the little rain we’ve had, we’ve already seen results”, stated Edgar Nieto, director of Abraham Castellanos School.

“A few years ago, they helped us with the installation of the school’s dome, and now with this harvesting system. More companies with social responsibility are needed. Thank you very much”said Iván García Gómez, a teacher at Adolfo López Mateos School.

With these types of initiatives, GPG Mexico reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development, promoting access to water in communities with limited resources and fostering environmental education among young people.
