On June 19, Hurricane Erick struck the Isthmus of Tehuantepec with force, severely impacting Juchitán, Oaxaca, and neighboring communities. In response to this emergency, GPG Mexico and the Nacanu’ Bií Community Center (Somos Viento) reaffirmed their commitment to the communities where we are present by actively joining support and recovery efforts.
Through its Social Engagement department, GPG took part in the cleanup brigades as part of a tequio, an ancestral community practice that reminds us that collective well-being is built through the participation of all. GPG supported Xquendas volunteers, social allies, and affected families, recognizing that solidarity is not only expressed in times of crisis, but nurtured daily through concrete actions.
This effort also prompted reflection on shared social responsibility and environmental care. As one local resident aptly said: “All that garbage stuck there is what the water brought… the problem is that it only affects a few of us when the river overflows.”
This emergency leaves behind valuable lessons: the importance of sound community practices, of caring for our environment, and of strengthening our networks of collaboration. Three GPG employees were directly affected by the river overflow, underscoring the need to be prepared and to stand together.
GPG extends its deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed—each according to their means—with commitment and empathy. GPG will continue working to strengthen emergency response capabilities, aligned with safety protocols and with our hearts set on the common good.
