GPG Mexico and CCC Tuxpan III & IV take part in the rescuing efforts of animals affected by an oil spill

As part of the response to the oil spill that occurred on October 17 near the town of Paso Real, CCC Tuxpan III & IV and we joined community volunteers to support the animal rescue efforts carried out on October 23 and 24.

The initiative was organized in collaboration with the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas – Lobos-Tuxpan Reef System (CONANP), the Environmental Department of the Tuxpan Municipality, and the veterinary clinic D’Pelos, with the goal of providing specialized care for birds affected by the spill.

It is worth noting that several of the volunteers and technicians who participated in this emergency had previously received training in a wildlife care workshop coordinated by GPG Mexico and CONANP in Tuxpan two years ago, in partnership with the Nakú Kayám turtle camp. This prior training allowed for a faster and more effective response to the environmental contingency.

Among the participants, eight GPG volunteers took part in the rescue under the direction of Dr. Mariemma Escorcia Quintana, a specialist in the rehabilitation of wildlife affected by pollution. The volunteers were trained in cleaning protocols that included:

  • Applying warm canola oil to help remove petroleum residues.
  • Cleaning the beak and nostrils to ensure proper breathing.
  • Washing with liquid soap and rinsing with warm water to eliminate remaining oil.
  • Controlled drying to prevent hypothermia and placing the birds in cages with food and water.

Thanks to this intervention, 12 oil-affected birds received direct care. All of them are currently stable and showing good feeding responses, representing significant progress in their recovery process.

Beyond the immediate rescue efforts, the initiative also helped raise awareness about the impacts of oil spills on wildlife and the importance of coordinated action in response to environmental emergencies.

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda — specifically SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 15: Life on Land — reaffirming our commitment to environmental protection, while also promoting community participation and contributing to the sustainable development of the region where we operate.
