Last Friday, 6 September, GPG Costa Rica organised a recreational hike to the main tourist attraction in the area, the Turrialba volcano.
The trek was 4.5 kilometres long with a climb up to approximately 2600 metres above sea level. On reaching the crater the altitude reached up to 3340 metres above sea level.
Learning about the volcano:
The Turrialba volcano forms a single system together with the Irazú volcano. The volcano’s highest point is 3,340 m above sea leveland is the second highest volcano in the country. In addition, there is a recorded average temperature of 16°C.
It is currently in a period of volcanic activity that began in the 1980s and progressively increased until 2010, with the first eruption.
In 2015, three large eruptions took place, forcing the Juan Santamaría international airport to close due to the expulsion of large quantities of gases and ash, producing for the first time the outflow of magma.
The last active eruption producing ash dates back to 2021.
