GPG Mexico holds a life project workshop with a group of community leaders in Tuxpán (Veracruz)

Eight university students have received scholarships through the “El Día Solidario” initiative of the Tuxpan III and IV combined-cycle power station, having stood out as leaders in the communities of the Ruta de los Kilómetros Alliance. In their search for an identity, they have called themselves Magnayanís Chuchutsipi, which in the Totonac language means “taking care of the place of origin”.

With the aim of preserving and improving their environment, they have proposed projects to address different community issues.

They are also looking for funding to make their initiatives a reality.

One example is Jimena Reyes Cruz, who through her project “Kilometres of Water”, plans to install rainwater harvesting systems and design a filter to treat soapy water in primary and secondary schools located along the Ruta de los Kilómetros. In addition to caring for, harvesting and treating water, this initiative seeks to reduce families’ financial expenditure on the purchase of this resource.

Jimena participated in the call “Cultivadoras de Agua y Clima”, promoted by Fundación Azteca of Grupo Salinas. On 25 April she was named the winner at the Earth 2024 Gala. As part of her award, Jimena will receive a series of training courses that will strengthen her project. She will also have the opportunity to compete in the next stage for funding for her initiative.

“I am excited to learn that we are going to receive training. We are working to make a change.”

On another note, Mariana Esther Solís Zetina is coordinating a series of conferences aimed at the Telebachillerato students. The purpose of these talks is to inspire these students to pursue further education or entrepreneurship through the experiences of outstanding women in fields such as leadership, arts, science and entrepreneurship. In addition, Mariana has participated in the Generation of Environmental Leaders Programme of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), where she presented her project “Interactive Travelling Museum, Magtayanís Chuchutsipi, Taking care of the place of origin”.

“I know we are going to win, I’m thrilled to know that we can compete in a project in which young people from Mexico, Canada and the United States are participating.”

As part of her project to preserve the Totonaca language and care for the environment, Adamaris Bautista García has produced a recipe book entitled “El Sabor de mi Comunidad”(The Taste of my Community), which is in the process of being published. As part of its initiative, Adamaris is preparing an application to participate in the Support Programme for Municipal and Community Cultures (PACMyC). In addition to seeking funding, she intends to strengthen her project by collaborating with institutions that can provide additional resources.

Nuria Yosuany Morales Cruz is working on the design of an analysis that will allow her to assess the water situation in the community of Villamar. The aim is to use this analysis as a basis for designing a collective rainwater harvesting system to ensure an adequate water supply.

“I would like to install a rainwater harvesting system in a strategic location where the whole community can access the resource.”

Dulce Esmeralda Cruz Méndez, Mari Carmen Romero Aguilar and Pedro Aníbal del Ángel Rivera are coordinating an auction to raise funds for the Nakú Kayám Sea Turtle Camp. Through environmental education experiences, artists will be invited to learn about turtle conservation and monitoring activities and to capture the essence of the experience in their art. These works will then be auctioned to raise funds for the cause.

Michel Guzmán Mora is developing a strategy to support seniors who want to learn to read and write. Michel believes that it is never to late for education when there is a desire to learn. That is why, as a young person, he seeks to pass on his knowledge to older people. He is currently looking for partnerships to strengthen his project.

Here are some of the details of the day the workshop took place :

The group of leaders, through their projects, present alternatives to solve socio-environmental and educational problems in their communities. In addition, during their process, they strengthen their capacities and skills, allowing them to boost their development as human beings and, without a doubt, continue their path of academic excellence.
