On 26 August 2023, the team working at the wind farm met in the town of Playa Vicente, a fishing village very close to our facility, to visit the lagoon and some of the islands: Cerro Cristo, Cerro Pato, Cerro Piedra and Cerro Gringa.
The Laguna Superior, situated in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, is a lagoon that is connected to the Pacific Ocean through a strait. It is part of the lagoon system found in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, alongside the Quirio, Occidental, Oriental, and Inferior lagoons. Flowing into the waters of the Laguna Superior are the Los Perros river, the Estacudo stream, the Chilapa river, and the San José stream. The Laguna Superior has a surface area of 380 km2 and is located 5 km from the wind farm.
This visit was carried out in the company of fishermen from Playa Vicente. These fishermen shared fascinating tales and legends about the lagoon and the islands, leaving our colleagues astonished — although many of them are from the region, they did not know these legends about the neighbouring community.
On the way, there were leisure activities such as fishing, water games with balls, songs or contemplative lectures on self-esteem, ending with a tasting of seafood from the region.
“The visit was very good and it would be good to repeat it to take our minds off the emotional burden of the work. On future occasions we can consider other spaces, perhaps involving the families or the volunteers (Xquendas) who work in the Community Centre,”said Juan de Jesús Castillo Alonso, social manager of Bií Hioxo, after the visit.
This type of activity aims to strengthen interpersonal relationships and help improve communications between the different sectors working in the wind farm. In this way, GPG Mexico’s Bií Hioxo wind farm meets the standard that aims to mitigate work-related stress and the various psychosocial risks that can arise during the working day.
