Bií Hioxo wind farm, in collaboration with the State of Oaxaca’s Institute of Public Education, Department of Indigenous Education, has built a classroom for the benefit of the 5 de Septiembre bilingual primary school in Juchitán, Oaxaca. This initiative aims to reinforce learning among the children attending this educational institution, where classes are held in Zapotec and Spanish.
The 5 de Septiembre bilingual primary school is located in the seventh district of Juchitán, one of the most remote areas of the municipal capital, and has 151 pupils. Prior to this intervention, the school was struggling with a lack of suitable space for teaching, which prompted the teachers, the school management and the parents to look for temporary solutions. One idea they tried was using parents’ homes as makeshift classrooms, but these proved insufficient to meet the children’s educational needs.
In response to this urgent need, Bií Hioxo wind farm committed to building a classroom with a capacity for 24 students. The classroom was handed over on 5 September and represents an important milestone for the school community and education in the region.
Members of the local community are grateful and happy about this initiative, which will provide better educational facilities for future generations. “I am really pleased that Bií Hioxo has built this classroom. While my children have not been able to benefit from such good facilities, I am glad that future students will have the opportunity to do so”.
The headmaster of the 5 de Septiembre bilingual primary school, Faustino Orozco, emphasised how important this donation is and how it has motivated more students to enrol for the new school year. “Neighbours and parents were able to see the new classroom being built at the end of the last school year and this gave them additional motivation to enrol their children this year. As the headmaster, I am grateful for the support given to the school and the children, as they are the ones who will benefit from this space.”
