The internal visit took place in August. The main objective was to visit the Nakú Kayám Camp and have an educational and environmental awareness experience with turtles of the species Chelonia mydas, commonly known as green turtles.
After arriving at the combined cycle power plant in Tuxpan, there was time for lunch and socialising with the team at the power plant, an opportunity to get to know each other or meet again. We then took part in a guided tour by the technical control team, who explained in detail how the Tuxpan III and IV combined cycle plant works, and how its gas and water cycles generate electric energy.
The tour lasted about two and a half hours, as the visitors asked many questions and exchanged knowledge with each other. The employees were able to get to know each other better, and also see how their efforts in the offices have a direct impact on the efficient functioning of the power plant.
During the evening, a visit was arranged to the Nakú Kayám Sea Turtle Camp. The visitors were warmly greeted by the camp’s team, consisting of Miguel Ángel Ramón Castillo and coordinator Verónica Reyes Uzcanga. The night excursion on the beach, aimed at monitoring and understanding the behaviour of the green turtle species (Chelonia mydas), was led by the Social Management team and the Día Solidario technicians and scholarship holders.
Throughout the excursion, the participants had the opportunity to witness and gain knowledge about various stages in the sea turtle’s life cycle, such as the nesting process, which involves the turtles coming ashore from the sea and eventually returning.
One of the most impactful experiences during the visit was witnessing the spawning process of the sea turtles, where these remarkable creatures, weighing between 150 to 200 kilograms, make an incredible effort to reach the beach and find a suitable spot to lay their eggs. The employees were thrilled as they observed this phenomenon, experiencing a rare and privileged environmental encounter that highlights GPG Mexico’s commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, the invited team participated in an awareness-raising activity based on the release of 70 green turtle hatchlings.
At the end of the activity, all participants were thanked for their contribution, including visitors, scholarship holders, volunteers and camp leaders, as well as the entire plant team that had participated. Each individual received a special award for their contribution.
There is no doubt that this experience of awareness raising, monitoring and environmental education was extremely positive. It serves as a starting point for a practice that has the potential to become a regular event among GPG Mexico employees.
Here are some thoughts shared by the participants:
“The experience of walking along the beach at night and witnessing the presence of other organisms in the ecosystem, observing the majestic green turtles as they walk, lay their eggs, and see them be born, is truly something extraordinary. Holding them in your hand before releasing them… sharing these moments with my colleagues. What other company provides such incredible experiences?”.
“I feel proud of GPG, not just for the power generation we contribute to, but also for the positive impact we have on communities and the protection of vulnerable species”.
