From July 14 to 20, the first week of the Xquenda Summer Course took place, organized by the Social Management team, the Nacanu’ Bií Community House, and the Bií Hioxo wind farm. The program aims to train young “Xquenda” volunteers —meaning “the soul” in Zapotec— through activities that promote soft skills, territorial awareness, and community leadership.
Launched in 2019 with a closing session at the Juchiteco Ecological Forum, this initiative now celebrates its fourth edition, firmly establishing itself as a community tradition that turns summer into a space for connection, learning, and collective action.
In its first edition, the course brought together 34 volunteers who helped operate and coordinate activities. By 2025, the network has grown to 62 participants, including new volunteers, relatives of team members, local landowners, and fishermen — all united by the course’s three core themes: peace culture, environmental awareness, and Zapotec heritage.
A strong sense of belonging has been cultivated through shared symbols such as the group banner, ceremonial face painting, and a unifying action motto — elements that help each young participant recognize themselves as part of a collective with shared values and purpose.
Throughout the week, the Xquenda volunteers have received tools to help them lead with respect, empathy, and engagement:
· Voice control and group facilitation
· Active listening, inclusion, and integration
· Songs, dances, and performance-based community dynamics
The team provided compassionate support through various sensitive personal situations, responding to emotional needs and family emergencies alike — proving that this learning environment is also a safe space for mutual care.
“I was too shy to speak, but when I saw everyone else talking, I didn’t want to stay quiet. Their words motivated me. Seeing how everyone is here made me feel comfortable,” shared Valeria, a volunteer.
This testimony clearly reflects the transformation a young person can experience when they find their voice, confidence, and a sense of belonging. In just a few words, it captures the essence of the program: shaping souls that connect, recognize each other, and act together.
At a time when the Isthmus has faced weeks of unrest and uncertainty, initiatives like this are more relevant than ever. They promote positive youth leadership and instill the belief that teamwork, shared care, and building community are powerful tools for real transformation. The Xquenda Summer Course doesn’t just shape individuals — it cultivates collective hope.
