Bií Hioxo wind farm commemorates International Mother Language Day in Juchitán (Oaxaca, Mexico)

In line with corporate social responsibility policies and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Community Outreach team of the Bií Hioxo wind farm organised this event at the CRI Santa Martha, located in the Seventh Section of Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca (Mexico).

From a Cultural and Educational focus, we continue to promote workshops and activities to boost and preserve the indigenous language as a fundamental part of the Zapotec identity.

The participation of bilingual schools that continue to strengthen the rescue of the mother language from the classroom is noteworthy. The Nacanú Bií Community House joins this initiative by offering workshops in pre-Hispanic music, folkloric dance and reading and writing in Zapotec for children, young people and older adults, with the aim of developing socio-emotional skills and promoting Zapotec as an integral part of cultural identity.

On February 22nd, a cultural evening was held in commemoration of International Mother Language Day, where students from partner schools participated with poetry recitation, as well as folkloric dance and pre-Hispanic music performances.

Below is a list of the poems submitted:

•    “Sicarú Xhavicente” – Harumi Sicaru Jiménez Velásquez from the Technical Secondary School #103.
•    “Guichii Guiee” – María Inés Valdivieso Jiménez from the Bilingual Primary School “05 de Septiembre”.
•    “Didxaza'” – Benjamín Vicente Jiménez from the Bilingual Primary School “05 de Septiembre”.

With this kind of actions, GPG Mexico, through its Bií Hioxo wind farm, promotes respect for the local idiosyncrasy and serves its main stakeholders, while contributing to the rescue of the Zapotec language, sacred to the indigenous people of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
