The construction of the new Cabo Leones II wind farm, developed by Global Power Generation, continues with the arrival of the first of the five scheduled equipment deliveries. It is a shipment of 50 of the 147 blades which will be installed on the 49 new Siemens Gamesa wind turbines in the project.
Each blade is 71.3 metres long and must be transported 173.9 km from the port to the wind farm. Due to the size of the components, transport is a great logistical challenge, meaning support is required from the Carabineros de Chile, the Chilean police force. The assembly of the blades is scheduled to start in July this year.
The wind farm will have a capacity of 205.8 MW. It is located on a 3,500-hectare plot in the Commune of Freirina, in the Huasco province (Chile), in a zone declared by the Chilean government as a pole of non-conventional renewable energy source development.
Work began in 2019 and the wind farm is set to start production before the end of 2020.
