GPG Costa Rica celebrates the successful transfer of the La Joya hydroelectric power station

After two decades of continuous effort, last December marked a significant milestone with the successful transfer of the La Joya hydroelectric power station to the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE). To commemorate this historic achievement, our colleagues at GPG Costa Rica gathered to celebrate and took the opportunity to present some gifts.

On 29 February, the Costa Rican team joined their loved ones for a special dinner followed by a magic show. The atmosphere was charged with magic and laughter, as they shared memorable moments.

During the evening, the dedication and commitment of seven key collaborators who have been with the La Joya hydroelectric power station from its early days to the present was honoured. They include Arturo Porras, Carlos Obando, Reinaldo Araya, Hurbel Quirós, José Solano, Miguel Araya and Ramón Monestel.

José Solano, who started as a personnel officer in 2003 and later became a resource manager, reflects on the importance of this milestone and the commitment of all its employees. “Reflecting on all that we have experienced over the years, it is clear that we have done an excellent job. The celebration of this milestone is fully deserved. I am convinced that, with the commitment of all employees and the energy brought by the recent additions, the Torito hydroelectric power plant will continue to be just as successful until the day of its transfer”.

Arturo Porras, head of O&M, has been an integral member of the company since the pre-operational stages, providing in-depth knowledge of the country’s hydroelectric power plants. According to Mr Porras, La Joya is a very unique facility, and ICE has acquired an asset in exceptional conditions”, reflecting its excellent state of preservation. For Mr Porras, La Joya is more than a power station; it represents the fruit of his dedication, a legacy that has contributed to the professional success of his two sons.

Miguel Araya recalls with nostalgia the days of the project’s construction, remembering“the happiness he felt when he was offered the opportunity to continue working in the operation and maintenance of the plant”.

Although all eyes are now on the hydroelectric power station at Torito, there is no losing sight of the new business opportunities that may arise in the country, whose energy matrix is made up of more than 98% renewable energy.

An evening filled with laughter and pleasant conversation, which is normal when you are in the company of people you appreciate, especially with this group of collaborators who, although small in number, stand out for their important achievements.

With the successful transfer of La Joya to ICE, a chapter of achievements and commitments is closed, marking the beginning of a new era in Costa Rica.
