On 21 and 23 February, the project “Environmental Educators” started in the Telebachilleratos “Países Bajos” and “Aire Libre” schools, located in the communities of the Alianza Rural de los Kilómetros in Tuxpan (Veracruz, Mexico).

The project began with workshops that addressed both in-depth skills issues and general environmental education knowledgeTopics covered included body mapping, self-assessment of skills, as well as fundamental aspects of environmental education, sustainable development, environmental ethics and basic concepts of environment and ecology. A total of 62 young people, ranging in age from 15 to 20, took part.

What is an environmental educator?

“Someone who understands the origin of that which they wish to preserve, something they care about, and strive to enhance it in order to keep it safe, in the hope of preserving it from generation to generation”

stated Guillermo Reyes, TEBAEV “Países Bajos”

“It is a voice that wants to change through awareness, seeking to transform places and people, with the aim of raising awareness of environmental problems and proposing actions to improve them”

said Alejandra Reyes, TEBAEV “Países Bajos”

The young people, for their part, agreed that environmental educators must possess the values and knowledge necessary to be able to transmit information for environmental awareness and, above all, to promote actions for the conservation of nature.

The environmental education workshops integrate the skills and knowledge of young people, enabling them to empower themselves to become environmental leaders in their communities. For all these reasons, the project will be carried out throughout the year, thus allowing for a follow up on the training process of the young people participating.
