Students from the Polytechnic University of the Gulf of Mexico visit the Bií Hioxo wind farm

As part of GPG Mexico’s Corporate Responsibility Policies, the Bií Hioxo wind farm in Oaxaca, Mexico, welcomes visits from educational institutions at various levels.

On Tuesday, 19 March, a group of 24 fifth-semester students in Automation and Industrial Control Engineering from the Polytechnic University of the Gulf of Mexico, located in Tabasco, along with their teacher Gladys Falconi Alejandro, toured the facility.

The tour started at the entrance of the northern substation, crossed the entire site and ended at the facilities of the southern substation, where they were welcomed by the “Nacanu’ Bií” Community Relations Team

In addition, Héctor Yariel Márquez Osornio led a safety training session in which he explained the evacuation routes at each facility and pointed out the potential risks at the wind farm.

The points that were presented during the visit were:

  • General information about the wind farm.
  • Corporate Policies.
  • Community Relations.
  • SCADA control room.
  • Interior of a wind turbine.
  • Nacelle of a wind turbine.

Exploring the inside of a wind turbine nacelle was a key part of the visit. To provide a more interactive explanation, the group from the Bií Hioxo wind farm visited the Universidad del Istmo campus in Juchitán

This visit was prompted by Siemens Gamesa’s donation of a training nacelle to the university ten years ago, amidst the growing number of wind energy projects in the area. Siemens Gamesa, the technology provider for most local wind farms, made this contribution to ensure open access to anyone interested in visiting the space.

The visit proved to be a valuable educational experience, providing students with the practical opportunity to learn about renewable energy, sustainability, and wind turbine technology.

Organising a visit from educational institutions needs careful coordination with the staff regarding logistics to ensure student safety and to maximise the educational experience. In recognition of this, GPG Mexico, through its Bií Hioxo wind farm, acknowledges the effort and dedication of its personnel in promoting the importance of renewable energy.
